A FORMER accountant is aiming to bring calmness and tranquillity to the region's boardrooms.

The Transcendental Meditation Centre was established by John Markham after coming across the practice while working for a building society in the 1970s.

The Skelmersdale-based centre teaches the relaxation technique to stressed out executives.

John stumbled across transcendental meditation when, unhappy at work, he began researching techniques to relax, and read about it in a magazine.

After using it successfully himself, he became a part-time meditation teacher.

In 1992, after training in Switzerland, he began teaching it full-time.

He moved to Skelmersdale and set up the centre to target the north west's stressed-out corporate executives.

"Transcendental meditation is a mental technique which is simple to apply and to integrate into our everyday lives," he says.

"There are six million practitioners worldwide and over 200,000 in the UK.

"The results are that people feel more creative, happier and less worried about what is happening around them.

"It not only benefits them personally, it benefits the company and everyone around them," he says.

John is keen to point out that more than 500 pieces of research into the effects of transcendental meditation have been validated by independent organisations.

The conclusion is that it is the most effective method of developing individual potential, reduce stress and promote good health.

One of the technique's highest profile advocates is Sir John Harvey-Jones, former chairman of ICI and one of the UK's most respected businessmen.
