Call for harmony

BY NATHAN BEVAN

A GLOBAL call over the Internet for world peace by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has prompted one of his supporters to stress the importance of Transcendental Meditation to achieving harmony.

Helen Evans, a former special needs teacher from Neville Terrace, Gadlys, has been a qualified tutor of TM for 23 years after being introduced to it by a colleague while working in Canada.

"I like things outside the norm and have always been interested in eastern philosophy and yoga, so things went from there," said Ms Evans.

Upon moving back to Wales, another chance meeting made her decide that this really was the route for her.

"I got a job as a teacher in Pontypridd where I was introduced to the woodwork teacher, who happened to be the head of Transcendental Meditation in Wales, and I became interested right from the start.

"It's an easy and natural way to bring inner calm and peace of mind, and to achieve a state of deep relaxation," she said.

The technique, founded by the Maharishi can also prove beneficial to one's study and creative energy.

"A lot of children I've taught have found meditation very useful. One girl's grades in particular improved drastically and my pupils certainly noticed a change in me when I meditated," added Ms Evans, who has a 16-year-old daughter of her own, Lauran.

"A few schools I've worked in have had heads that have been very open to TM and one even began practising it himself along with his wife, as did a few parents.

"I've also taught lots of people in Aberdare and the Cynon Valley over the years," she said.
