Forget crime, just meditate

There's a new addition to the list of crime-stopping initiatives in Birmingham - transcendental meditation.

Followers of the guru Maharishi are planning to build seven centres across the West Midlands, including Birmingham.

And teacher Hugh Meads is hopeful that if enough people practice Transcendental Meditation (TM), the calming influence transmitted from their body and soul will spread across the city's troubled communities.

Mr Meads, a media lecturer at Bournville College, said: "Studies on 48 cities in the US showed that if one per cent of the city population practise transcendental meditation the crime rate went down.

"In Birmingham we will need around 100,000 people to do it."
