HOW TO DOWNLOAD WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER

When you click on the option to download Windows Media Player, you will be taken to a web page where you will be presented with a number of options. Choose the version of Windows Media Player appropriate for your type of computer.

The following shows a typical example of the process of downloading Windows Media Player Version 7.1 on a typical Windows 98 PC. Please bear in mind that this may not be exactly the same when you download it as the software may have been updated, or you may be downloading a different version onto a different type of computer.

After selecting your preference, and entering your details as requested, the download will begin. You will see a dialogue box something like this (if you are using Windows 98).

Please choose the option to "save this program to disk" if this is not already selected.

Then click "OK".

Then you will be presented with an option as to where on your computer the file should be downloaded. Usually this is the desktop as shown in the diagram, although, if you know how to, you can direct it into a different folder. (The dialogue box shown wont look exactly like this because the files you have on your pc will be different to ours).

Then click "Save"

Then the download will begin - you will see a dialogue box something like the following. Note that it tells you how long the download is expected to take depending on your connection speed, which will vary as the download takes place - so dont be put off if it seems to be taking a long time - with any luck the connection may speed up.

A speed of 4KB/sec is fairly average for a typical pc with a typical 56k modem. If, however, it does seem to be taking forever then you can cancel the download and try again at another time when traffic on the internet is less heavy. Sometimes the download will even pick up where it previously left off.

Please ensure that the box entitled "close this dialogue box when download is completed" is NOT ticked so that you will know for certain when the download is finished. If it is ticked then simply click in the little box to remove the tick.

Now just wait until the download is finished. Expect it to take about 30 minutes - it's well worth the wait. (Go and have a cup of Maharishi Ayur Veda tea while you wait!)

When the download is complete you will see something like this. Simply click on "close" at this stage, if you dont want to install Windows Media Player immediately. You can leave the downloaded file sitting there on your pc until such time as you wish to install it. However, it shouldl not take quite as long to install - the slowest part of the process is the download which is now complete.
